FAQ

How long will my treatment take?
At Sia Hair Salon, we realize that not everyone can spend hours getting their hair coloured. So we try to have your hair coloured, shampooed & conditioned within an hour. That’s long enough for a decent browse through a magazine, but short enough to fit it into your lunch hour!

Do you cut hair too?
Yes, we’re experts in hair cut.

Will you style my hair afterwards?
Yes. We’ve found that many clients like to style their hair themselves (or they change it as soon as they get home!). So we provide a range of hairdryers, styling tools and product to let you do it your way. It’s just another way we can make it more affordable for you to have fabulous hair. If you would like Sia Hair to style your hair please choose from one of the three options at the bottom of the services menu and advise the salon that you would like this when you place your booking.

How safe are your organic colours?
Very. If you’re a Mum-to-be, a health nut or just plain careful about what you put on your body, Sia organic colours are the way to go. Sourced from ethical suppliers, they’re made from as many certified organic ingredients as are available today with no ammonia, or any of that other nasty stuff.

I have dark hair and I want to go blond – what is the process?
It is a process – and to do it well it will take time. It will depend on the colour build up in your hair, it can even depend on your DNA for how light we can get your colour. There are a number of options for the process, so we would prefer to do a test strand at the outset, and ideally intersperse your lightening process with treatment for strength (the lightening process causes your hair to lose moisture and protein). but, we will get you there with your hair in great condition.

What can I do if my hair is too damaged for any more colour or lightening?
Come in for a salon only protein treatment, this will make a significant difference, to start with – we’ll also recommend some great take home products to help rebuild your hair and make a plan for you to come in for another test strand – we will get you to the colour you want, it will just take a little time.

Do you colour hair extensions? Why not?
No. Your hair extensions may be synthetic – and even if real hair, most have a chemical coating, so we can give no guarantee of a great result (and we love great results). We suggest you buy the extensions to match the colour you have (or are changing to) rather than matching what you have to the extensions – if you want advice just ask! We can highlight around weaves however! Also do global colours on your real hair.

What do I choose – semi or permanent?
Any artificial colour fades. A semi actually lasts longer then a permanent colour as the molecule is larger! But, you need a permanent to cover grey or to lighten the hair a couple of shades (you can lighten natural hair – but you cannot lighten artificial colour with colour). Ultimately your colourist will advise you which is the best choice for you.

I had blond highlights and I put a box colour over them, can I have highlights redone over the top?
This really depends on the condition of your hair. A test strand is your best option here – just call in and we’ll take the smallest snip, and let you know your next course of action.

I don’t know what to book for but I want something different!
Then book for consultation and colour – at the appointment, give us an idea of what you like (and don’t like), and we will know how to get you there.

I have been lightening my hair but now I want to go dark – how is this done?
In most cases you will need a filler colour, then an all over colour. We would advise you to return three weeks for another colour as this first colour will fade really quickly (as your hair will be very porous). The subsequent colour will hold much better!

My colour is too dark, what can I do?
We can’t lighten colour with colour – (natural hair base yes) but artificial colour no. We can do a gentle cleanse on you hair to lift layers of colour – most of the time you would need a colour over the top after –as your hair will have a raw undertone, and we will need to counteract some reflects so you have a beautiful result.

Why do I need a toner after foils?
To deposit a tone or counteract a reflect. The toner also helps smooth the hair – though you may well need a treatment for even better condition.

Why do my lowlights end up brassy?
All colour oxidises and lowlights are often added to already bleached hair. The undertones of colour are always warm, regardless of how ash they may start out – so as your colour fades, these warm undertones come through and your colour appears brassy. Often either an in between salon visit for a toner – or using specific colour supporting shampoos will help minimise and even correct colour fading.

My hairdresser has put red in my hair!
Maybe. Or it could be as your brunette colour fades and the warm tones show – even when not added – and there is no way to avoid a colour oxidising unless you can hide out in an oxygen tank. Some specific colour care shampoos will help minimise fading, and the resulting red from showing. Also, if you are going lighter, a tint is never going to go lighter than powder lightener it will always will have element of warmth. If a ‘cool’ colour is your ideal then a powder lightener (or bleach) is your best option. With any bleach, a skilled colourist will be able to minimise any damage to your hair and advise the best course of treatments and after colour home care.

Is your organic colour 100% organic?
There is no 100% organic colour (if there was, it wouldn’t be able to colour), however at Sia Hair we use a Schwarzkopf range – Essentially, it has minimal chemicals and no ammonia or peroxide. It will cover 100% grey, can lift hair colour if needed and also has a gentle powder lightener for organic foils, just ask your colourist for you best options!
